Dance Curriculum
Occupying several volumes and covering the full range of American, Latin American, International Style and Exhibition/Theatre Arts dancing, the Fred Astaire Curriculum is the most fully documented and up-to-date fund of ballroom dance knowledge available in the world. Originally inspired by Mr. Astaire's superb style of dancing, it is the subject of regular study by highly skilled dance directors and teachers.

Ballroom

Foxtrot- Foxtrot is ultra-smooth and sophisticated, and is one of the most popular slow dances of all time. Classic crooners such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and Nat King Cole provide the jazzy standards ideal for this dance.

Waltz-Done to a three count, the waltz is an elegant and graceful dance that will never go out of style. This traditional dance has continued to rise in popularity at weddings, anniversaries and graduations.

Tango-This dramatic and passionate dance has been popularized in many Hollywood movies. The Tango conjures up images of dancers with roses clenched between their teeth.

Viennese Waltz- Couples Whirl around the floor; first one way, then another. Grand and majestic, this fast version of the waltz originated in Austria.

Latin

Cha Cha- Named after the sound made by the feet when doing this dance, cha-cha is an exciting syncopated Latin dance. The cha-cha rhythm is found in much of today’s popular music.

Rumba- Rumba is Cuban in origin and is often referred to as the “dance of love”, Sultry and romantic, the music is a mix of African and Latin rhythms.

Samba- From Brazil, this pulsating, gyrating, festive dance brings to mind pictures of the carnivals of Rio de Janeiro. Unlike the other Latin dances that are stationary, many samba steps travel around the floor.

Paso Doble-Translating to double step or two step, the Paso Doble is a representation of the bullfight, with the man as the matador and the lady the cape.

Bolero-This lovely and romantic dance combines the sensuality of the Latin hip movement with a rise and fall action

Mambo-This dance may be described as a riff or a Rumba with a break or emphasis on 2 and 4 in 4/4 time. The Mambo can be danced according to the individual dancer’s temperament. Conservative dancers can maintain a closed position, while more daring dancers can perform breakaway steps and completely separate themselves from each other.

Night Club

Salsa-Salsa is a club dance version of the mambo with a more relaxed styling which allows the dancer to break on the one beat.

Merengue-With its simple steps and 1-2 march-like rhythm, it was rumored to be initially performed by the guests of a crippled general in the Dominican Republic who wanted to imitate him as he dragged his lame right leg across the floor! The Merengue is known for its liveliness, with a step on every beat, knee action, and wiggles from side to side. Since it doesn’t move around the dance floor, it’s perfect for small, crowded dance floors.

Hustle-Popularized in the disco era, the Hustle is a member of the swing family with quick, quick timing and a syncopated break.

Swing-Swing is a broad category that includes Jive, Jitterbug, Lindy Hop, and Shag, among others. Swing is fun, fast, and energetic, and has recently enjoyed a huge revival.
